Disc Injuries
The bones of the spine are called vertebrae. When the vertebrae move it is cushioned by small discs that are round and flat with a tough outer shell (capsule) that surrounds the jelly-like center (nucleus). The discs serve as shock absorbers.
Spinal discs become more rigid with age and become more vulnerable. Many people have disc deterioration, or degenerative disc disease, as they grow older.
Discs can be damaged due to injury, disease or normal wear and tear, causing them to bulge or rupture. These herniated discs can cause pain due to the damage to the outer shell or from pressure the herniated disc puts on the adjacent nerve roots as it pushes out or pinches the nerve root. Pain or numbness may occur in the area of the body affected by the nerve,. For example, a herniated disc may press on one of the nerve roots of the large nerve that extends from the lower back down the back of the leg, causing pain and numbness in the leg - a condition called sciatica.
